Year 1 Trip to Thurstaston, by Mrs Stewart

Date: 20th Jun 2022 @ 8:38am

The children in year 1 had a wonderful time at Thurstaston on Thursday. We were very lucky with the beautiful weather too!

The children took part in several activities across different curriculum areas whilst on site.

For Science, the children hunted for lots of signs of Summer as part of our ongoing work on Seasons.

The children also practised some skills for sports day with an egg and spoon race and learning how to skip at speed.

We are also looking at landscapes in art and what a beautiful landscape to sketch!

Our main aim for the trip was to observe the different physcial features in Thurstaston compared to our village location. The children were in awe of the features they discovered.

We also must mention the exceptional behaviour of all children whilst on the trip, the staff tea

m were so proud of them. Also, a really big thank you to our wonderful parent helpers, we couldn't do our trips without you! Thank you for giving up your time.

Opening the Will Allen Community Garden, by Mrs Walters

Date: 16th Jun 2022 @ 3:46pm

Today was a very special day at St George's as we officially opened the Will Allen Community Garden at upper site.

The garden is named after one of our former pupils Will, who sadly passed away after a prolongued illness, aged 14.

The year 6 choir sang as Will's family joined us to mark the opening of the garden - a tranquil and peaceful spot.

We discovered Will had been a keen gardener and we hope the garden will be a sanctuary for many as well as providing vegetables and flowers planted by pupils and families.

Freestanding Structures in Y1, by Ms C Jones

Date: 26th May 2022 @ 4:19pm

In D and T this half term we have been looking at freestanding structures. As a class we decided to make equipment for a playground. Here are the steps we followed:

  • Select and use tools, skills and techniques, explaining their choices.
  • Select new and reclaimed materials and construction kits to build their structures.
  • Use simple finishing techniques suitable for the structure they are creating.
  • Evaluate their product by discussing how well it works in relation to the purpose, the user and whether it meets the original design criteria

Tasks for the morning included, planting pollinators, making wigwams for our sweet peas and beans, digging out and replanting potatoes, building a bird bath, planting a variety of fruit and veg from strawberries to broccoli, courgette to rhubarb and lettuce to tomatoes.

We have also sown a variety of seeds, including carrots, beetroot, onion, spring onion, radish, cauliflower and kale.

Year 4 gardening club and top site dragon club will be maintaining the garden by making sure our plants are well fed and watered throughout the summer term.

We can’t wait to see how our garden develops and enjoy the fruits of our labour!

Year 1 - Science Week, by Miss Gough-Hughes

Date: 18th Mar 2022 @ 4:04pm

Science Week - Year One

th.jpg

The children have absolutely loved celebrating British Science Week this week. They have taken part in lots of exciting activities to celebrate this, linking to the theme of growth.

Throughout the week, they have enjoyed a virtual visit to Yew Tree Farm whereby they got to see lots of different animals in their habitat and ask questions to find out more.

Also this week, the children enjoyed completing a growth themed activity where they used string to measure their height. They then used the string to compare the size of them to other objects around school.

During a lunchtime club, some children took part in a curly wurly challenge, which was a bit messy but great fun. The champion managed to stretch their curly wurly to an amazing 76 cm.

The children have had a fantastic week and have thoroughly enjoyed participating in British Science Week. We have set an optional home learning science task on Seesaw for the children this weekend, if they would like to take a look.

Well done Year One!
