Super, Stretchy Slime in 2A, by Mrs Malloy

Date: 11th Feb 2022 @ 2:51pm

We have had lots of fun learning how to create the perfect slime as part of our Changing Shape Science lessons in 2A.  We had to experiment with the amount of saline solution we put in our mixture to make the best slime.  We used a measurung jug to measure the glue, a pipette to add the saline and food colouring and and a tablespoon to measure the bicarbonate of soda.  What super scientists we are in Year 2!

First aid training in Year 4, by Miss Hughes

Date: 10th Feb 2022 @ 10:29am

Year 4 were so lucky today to have Garry come and visit us from Flat Stan first aid. Garry taught us all about how to take care of ourselves as well as other people in an emergency situation. We had an opportunity to practice approaching people in an emergency situation, how to get help and how to administer some first aid ourselves.

First aid is such an important life skill, and we really enjoyed learning about DRS ABC:

Danger
Response
Shout

Airway
Breathing
Circulation

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation or (CPR) can be life saving if someone has stopped breathing or their heart has stopped. Garry taught us how to effectively give CPR in emergencies and we were able to practice this on Flat Stan dummies.

If you would like anymore information on our training or some training yourself, you can find more information at https://flatstan-firstaid.co.uk

3D and 3E Liverpool Museum Trip, by Mr Thomas

Date: 7th Feb 2022 @ 3:01pm

Last week, Year 3 visited the Liverpool World Museum. We enjoyed our journey through 5000 years of human life in the Nile Valley. We learnt about ancient burial practices, explored Egypt’s relationship with other civilisations, and identified what it was like to live in ancient Egypt and how you could achieve eternal life.

As part of our experience, we were lucky enough to take part in a practical workshop. We re-enacted a mummification and became immersed in the mummification process.

Safer Internet Day, by Mr Nathan

Date: 7th Feb 2022 @ 9:02am

Year 6 enjoyed a Safer Internet workshop which focussed on how to keep safe on Social Media. The children gained much knowledge about minimum age requirements, making good choices and knowing how to report offensive and in appropriate material.

Many of these themes were discussed on a online parental workshop with Mr Nathan, back in December (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-D4dKMVQo8).

We all need to work together - and make good choices - to enjoy technology in the safest way possible.

Congratulations to Year 4 pupil Denver who competed in the SEIB Trailblazers Championship on her pony Thornberry Minuet (Minnie) at the weekend and won!

Denver competed in the show jumping section and had to compete against the clock - she completed the course in an amazing 38 seconds!

She will now go on to compete for the championship title at Stone Leigh Park, Warwickshire at the end of July.

Her family are very proud and we are all thrilled for Denver and Minnie and wish them every success at the competition.

Crumble!, by Mr Nathan

Date: 4th Feb 2022 @ 9:30am

Year 6 were very pleased to welcome Paul Boyd (co-founder of Boyd Education) to explore the Crumble kits we have recently purchased. Paul Boyd is a national leader in the STEM field, helping support the DfE with a number of STEM-based trials. As an education consultant and advisor, he was only too happy to help train members of our staff and demonstrate the vast potential of our newly-acquired hardware with a number of our Year 6 children.

The children had a terrific time, looking to create algorithms to program the Crumble hardware - they marvelled at its complexity, but also its simplicity. It is this explorative and problem-solving nature that we wish to nurture amongst our children and these kits - in tandem with the training our staff have experienced - will ensure that this is merely the beginning of this journey.

We are excited that Paul is looking to come back in the near future to share his expertise with our Year 5 team. Together, in partnership, we are looking to encourage and enthuse the next generation of scientists, engineers, software developers et al.

Tangled Web, by Mr Nathan

Date: 4th Feb 2022 @ 9:04am

This week, the children of Top Site marked Safer Internet Day by thoroughly enjoying Altru's memorable performance of 'Tangled Web' - a play designed to help primary-aged children explore and idenitfy the risks associated with using the internet.

The performance helped the children learn to:

  • keep their personal information safe online;
  • learn about age restrictions and recommendations for websites, games and apps;
  • navigate friendships online and stay away from cyber-bullying;
  • be aware of those giving false information and that people are not always who they appear to be online;
  • understand the consequences of unsafe internet use, including the fact that things online cannot be removed or 'taken back'.

Volcanic eruption, by Miss Hughes

Date: 4th Feb 2022 @ 8:41am

In our Year 4 Geography lessons, we have been learning all about volcanoes, how they are formed and the physical Geography around them. We had some fantastic volcano models come into school and got very excited about creating our own volcanic eruptions. With a little help from our Science learning on states of matter, we put our knowledge to the test (with a little help from some carbonated drinks and mentos) to create our own erupting volcano.

We have also been following the news about the recent Tonga eruption caught on satellites. If you haven't had a chance to see it for yourself: https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/60009509

Keep and eye out on your google classroom for the chance to make your own erupting volcano at home with your adults.

Holocaust Memorial Day Remembered, by Mr Cassidy

Date: 27th Jan 2022 @ 1:13pm

All our children in year 6 took part in live lessons with Heidi Argent.  Heidi is one of the living survivors of the holocaust.  Heidi shared her story in a very poignant lesson with the children.  Although the holocaust is a horrific chapter in human history, it is important that our children are part of our commitment to learn about the holocaust, remember the survivors and ensure that this can never be repeated.

Comments from our children about the lesson included:

"It taught how the Jewish people were treated.  I learnt that everybody should be equal."

"The personal insight from Heidi opened a up a window into how horrible the Jewish people were treated and made me determined not to ever allow this to happen again"

You can find out more about the holocaust survivors and their stories on the Holocaust memorial trust website:

Oracy Champions!, by Mrs Roberts

Date: 25th Jan 2022 @ 11:16am

Last week, some of our Year Six children took part in a Wirral-wide oracy competition. In preparation for this, they had to work really hard preparing speeches in their classes before presenting them in assembly. The overall winners of Year Six were then entered into a competition where they competed against three other primary schools.

Our finalists performed amazingly and went on to win first and third place in the competition.
A huge well done to our girls who came first, and our boys who cam third. We all agree that their entries were outstanding and we are very proud of them.

You can watch the winning entries here.

5C Outdoor learning, by Miss Reil

Date: 6th Jan 2022 @ 3:46pm

Year 5 have been looking at Helen Keller for our learning hero for this half term's Respect quality, self awareness. We have been exploring Helen Keller's life, the obstacles she had to overcome, who helped her and how she then helped others.

As part of this we reflected on the difficulties she would have faced and we looked at how we could work as part of a team to help each other navigate an obstacle course. The children developed fantastic strategies to help each other and adapted these as we went along. We discussed what self awareness skills we had been using and developing.

Year 5 and 6 Enterprise Fair, by Mrs Parker

Date: 15th Dec 2021 @ 4:58pm

Yesterday, Year 5 and 6 attended a Christmas Enterprise Fair run by the Enterprise council. Children across Top Site made items to sell. They also had some edible treats to sell and games. The children had fun and currently we have raised over £150 for school funds. We have some cute reindeer facecloths (containing a boxed Dove soap and hair bobble) left, which we will be selling at the gate tomorrow and Friday.
