The School Experience Programme
The School Experience Programme (SEP) offers a short school classroom-based experience to people who are considering applying to teach on Weatherhead TSA's School Direct Programme. The School Experience Programme will include observation of teaching in your preferred subject and an opportunity to talk to teachers about day-to-day life in a school.
School experience is vital for anyone hoping to enter Initial Teacher Training (ITT). Candidates for ITT are expected to show that they have a good understanding of the role of a teacher, give examples of creative and innoative teaching styles they have obsevred and discuss how they may tailor lessons to cater for students with different abilities and backgrounds. A high-quality school experience prior to application can help to evidence this.
Participants will need to meet the programme requirements to be able to apply for the SEP. These are broadly the same as the requirements for the School Direct course and are:
- an intention to apply for School Direct Training with the Weatherhead Teaching School Alliance for September 2017 start
- have Maths and English at grade C or above (or equivalent)
- have, or are expected to have, a minimum of a 2:2 in a relevant degree subject
- have had less than 10 days experience in an English state school in the last 12 months
We are able to offer experience in Key Stage 4 and 5 in the following subjects:
Art & Design, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Computing, DT, English, Geography, History, Maths, Media & Film, Modern Languages, Music, Physics, Physical Education, Religious Education
The duration of each placement will vary from one day up to 10 days. After the initial one day placement, we may agree further placement days of varying number based on the subject area and your commitment to apply for our School Direct Programme. We do not charge for the School Experience Programme.
