Discovering the History of New Brighton with Mr Breeze

We have been very lucky to have Mr Breeze join us this afternoon to tell us all about the history of New Brighton.

We have found out how different New Brighton was when Mr Breeze was a young boy. People used to travel to New Brighton for a holiday!

Did you know the Ferry used to come to New Brighton Pier from Liverpool and it used to have 3 decks? They also had a boat that you could go on to dance in the evenings. Sadly, the pier was not looked after and it fell down in a bad storm.

There was also a big tower, 5m bigger than Blackpool, which had a cable car that took you to the beach, but it was not looked after and one day it caught on fire and burnt down.

New Brighton also had a fair ground with lots of exciting rides and games as well as an indoor fair, just like the 2p machines we see there today. Mr Breeze showed us how the money he used to pay for these rides and games was different when he was a boy compared to the coins we use today.

We were surprised to hear that New Brighton also had a steam train that ran along the water front and a lake that had paddle boats on.

These days we go to Guinea Gap to swim, but Mr Breeze used to swim in an openair pool which was enormous and very deep. It had a giant diving board and people would queue outside to go in. Today we have a Morrison’s and Light Cinema where the pool used to be.

We have really enjoyed being able to speak to Mr Breeze about his wonderful memories of New Brighton and ask him lots of interesting questions.

Thank you Mr Breeze!

Do you have anyone at home that you could ask about their memories of New Brighton?
