Year 2 Outdoor Learning, by Mrs Cameron-Ivanov

Date: 31st Mar 2022 @ 10:25am

For outdoor learning today, we did science.

Our key question that we had to investigate was "Which materials are waterproof?"

A selection of materials items were laid out for us to use. They were made of lots of different materials such as paper, nylon and wool

Firstly, we predicted whether we thought each material would be waterproof or not. We made our predictions by using our prior knowledge and feeling each item. We discussed this in our groups and explained reasons for our thoughts.

In our groups, we replicated rain by using water pistols and firing water at each item. We observed closely to see how the water reacted on each item. We noticed that the water appeared to run off the waterproof items, whereas the non waterproof items seemed to absorb the water and the insides became wet. We recorded our results in a table.

What waterproof materials can you find at home?

Year 4 Outdoor Learning, by Mrs Cameron-Ivanov

Date: 25th Mar 2022 @ 12:54pm

For our outdoor learning this week, we have been exploring different angles and linking our knowledge of right angles to quarter, half, three quarter and full turns.

We used "angle eaters" to support us with finding right angles in shapes and in the real world. We know that if an angle is smaller than a right angle it is called an acute angle, and if it is greater than a right angle then it is obtuse. Can you explore the types of angles you can find around your home?

Can we save the town from disaster? ? Year 4 volcano workshop, by Miss Hughes

Date: 23rd Mar 2022 @ 10:46am

This morning, we were lucky enough to have a special visitor from The National History Museum. We were learning all about Earthquakes and Volcanoes, when a news alarm told us about a potential eruption about to happen.

The museum needed our help to investigate geological forces from deep within the Earth and learn about earthquakes and flowing lava.

We had to use our scientific thinking skills, our knowledge of equipment like seismometers and thermometers to help decide whether to evacuate the town or not.

We loved being scientists today! ??

Year 4 Science week fun, by Mrs Palmi

Date: 23rd Mar 2022 @ 10:25am

Last week, for science week, Year 4 were challenged to see who could make the stretchiest slime!

Using their engineering and scientific skills, they investigated what factors affected how stretchy their slime was and recorded their results.

Then, they used their mathematical knowledge to compile their data and create bar graphs to compare the slimes.

Year 4 rose to the challenge and had a fantastic morning!

Year 6 - Judaism Workshop with Tamar, by Miss M Jones

Date: 21st Mar 2022 @ 7:11pm

Year 6 were fortunate to have Tamar with us today! Tamar taught us all about her Jewish faith - it was fascinating to hear her vast knowledge and of her experiences of being a Jewish member of society.

We discussed many things, such as: the Torah scrolls; challah bread; Shabbat; menorahs, synagogues; yads; mezuzahs; Rabbis; prayers; and kippahs.

We had lots and lots of questions, and had every opportunity to show off our knowledge of what we'd already learned about the Jewish faith during our R.E lessons!

A huge thank you to Tamar for giving your time to extend our learning.

Y6 Science Week, by Miss Lewis

Science Week - Year One

th.jpg

The children have absolutely loved celebrating British Science Week this week. They have taken part in lots of exciting activities to celebrate this, linking to the theme of growth.

Throughout the week, they have enjoyed a virtual visit to Yew Tree Farm whereby they got to see lots of different animals in their habitat and ask questions to find out more.

Also this week, the children enjoyed completing a growth themed activity where they used string to measure their height. They then used the string to compare the size of them to other objects around school.

During a lunchtime club, some children took part in a curly wurly challenge, which was a bit messy but great fun. The champion managed to stretch their curly wurly to an amazing 76 cm.

The children have had a fantastic week and have thoroughly enjoyed participating in British Science Week. We have set an optional home learning science task on Seesaw for the children this weekend, if they would like to take a look.

Well done Year One!

Science Week - Year Two

th.jpg

The children have absolutely loved celebrating British Science Week this week. They have taken part in lots of exciting activities to celebrate this, linking to the theme of growth.

On Monday, we began our exciting week with special visitors. The first being a virtual visit from Chester Zoo who gave us lots of interesting information and facts about nocturnal animals. The children loved seeing the artefacts they showed on screen, including feathers, animal fur, animal skulls etc. The children received lots of opportunities to ask questions to further their understanding. On Seesaw, you will find some additional activities from Chester Zoo which your child may enjoy completing if they wish. During this day, we also had a visitor from a parent who is a sports science teacher in a local high school, and a visit from an engineer/designer of transport vehicles including F1 cars. Both adults really helped the children to understand the variety of STEM careers that are available and possible jobs for the future. They loved asking them different questions about their job roles.

On Tuesday, we continued our exciting science week. We recapped our understanding of the term life cycle from the Autumn term. To support us with this, some of us took part in a live lesson whereby we were able to see both a calf and a lamb being born. The children saw the process from it being in the mum's tummy, to it being born and then identifying what would happen next. We enjoyed finding out about the life cycles of different animals and comparing their stages.

On Thursday, we had an exciting trip to top site to visit the science lab and complete some science related outdoor learning. It was our very first visit to the science lab so the children were very excited. We talked through the important rules when in the lab, in order to keep us safe. We then partook in a live minibeast lesson whereby we learnt about different minibeasts and their microhabitats, with a particular focus on earthworms. We then walked to the allotment on top site to complete some outdoor learning. Here, we were trying to find earthworms, digging them up carefully in the soil. Then we used an identification sheet, a hand lense and ruler, to try to identify which type of earthworm it was.

The children have had a fantastic week and have thoroughly enjoyed participating in British Science Week. We have set an optional home learning science task on Seesaw for the children this weekend, if they would like to take a look.

Well done Year Two!

Year 5 Science week, by Mr Knowles

Date: 18th Mar 2022 @ 3:33pm

This week Year 5 have been having fun for British science week. The theme was growth so they made slime and saw how far it would stretch. This linked with their work on irreversible and chemical changes. Today we were lucky enough to have a visit from staff from Mosslands School who worked with the children to find out how yeast reacted in hot and cold water.

Year 4 Science Week Outdoor Learning, by Mrs Cameron-Ivanov

Date: 18th Mar 2022 @ 12:02pm

For our outdoor learning this week we have been looking at classification with a focus on earthworms. Did you know there are 3 types of earthworm? Earthworkers, deep burrowers and surface dwellers. They are all different in colour and size.

We started by searching for worms, which was great fun! Then we had time to research the 3 different types of worms and what the differences were between them. Using a worm identifcation sheet and hand lenses, we observed our worms carefully and asked questions to identify what type of worms we had found. Finally, in partners we created our own worm classification keys, using the knowledge we had gained.
